A common question that is asked by many website owners when it comes to SEO and getting backlinks for their domain name is, "What are backlinks and why is Google looking at them so much?". The truth of the matter is that backlinks are an important part of your SEO strategy. If you have a well optimized website with a high PageRank then you will get a high number of natural search engine traffic to your site and in turn get a large number of backlinks pointing back to your domain name.
Google has a tendency to rank sites according to the quality of backlinks they present. This is known as PageRank and is shown by the Page Rank bar on the Google Toolbar. The higher the PR of a site the more likely you are to have the visitor to click on the backlink. In order to receive a high PageRank the link you provide to another website must be relevant to the content on that site and have a high quality.
It is for this reason that you will often see that Google will penalize sites for building backlinks too quickly. This is because they want to ensure that the page linking back to them is credible. If the incoming link is from a random third party then the page linking back to them may not be regarded as credible. As a result the incoming link will be rejected and the domain name will have a negative ranking.
But whilst you may be penalized for generating a high quantity of backlinks over a short space of time it does have an effect. Google likes to have a varied range of backlinks pointing to a domain name and as such they are somewhat unable to do anything to remove these backlinks once they are generated. This means that you can continue to generate a large volume of backlinks without any penalties being applied to you. However you need to generate a large volume of backlinks in order to continue to enjoy this benefit.
In addition Google also looks at how authoritative the source of the backlink is. They determine this by looking at the Page Rank of the link. A high Page Rank has a lot to do with the trust that the search engine has in that website. If the link originates from a credible source the Page Rank will be more likely to pass the gage and the backlinks will also be passed on to other search engines. Therefore if you want to raise your ranking then you should aim to generate some good quality backlinks from credible sources.
One of the most effective ways to generate links is to write articles and submit them to article directories. In doing this you create an anchor text that the search engine can follow when searching the internet for related information. For instance if someone were searching for information relating to the subject of running a blog on MySpace, then the anchor text I would use for this search would be "myspace blog" along with my website address. This gives the search engine the best chance of selecting it as one that matches what they are looking for. However in order to create backlinks from MySpace blogs you need to sign up for their service. Once this is done you can then submit articles and links on a regular basis to create an impressive portfolio of websites linked back to you.
Another way of generating backlinks is by signing up to forums that relate to your domain name. You can then put your website link in your signature line when leaving such forums. This gives your website an appearance of being a active member on that forum. You then have the opportunity to create forum discussions and leave comments on other members' posts. Again these all give the impression that you are an active member and that you are well respected within the forum community.
